Signs You Might Have Voles

Burrows:

• Have round entrances about 1-1.5” in diameter
• Make the ground feel spongy
• Can be detected by probing about 3” below the surface
• May have piles of earth near entrance

Damage:

• Plants cut off from their roots
• Damage to trees and shrubs below ground

Voles Nuisance Concern:

• They feed on roots of garden plants, vegetables, grass and juniper bushes
• Damage that occurs under snow cover often escapes notice till it is too late
• Vole damage can be indicated by gnaw marks, droppings, runaways and burrows

Vole Removal:

• APCS recommend the use of baits
• Quick and efficient
• No secondary poisoning of pets or wildlife

• General Information about Voles:

• 3-10 litters a year (some sources say up to 12!), each consisting of 3-6 babies
• They are active anytime, day or night
• Their bodies measure 5-8 inches long, including their tail
• They dig many short, shallow burrows and make underground nests of grass, stems and leaves
